Numurkah’s older homes carry the same story as the rest of the valley: timber stumps that have done their decades in reactive clay and are now past it. We travel north of Shepparton regularly to restump, re-level and underpin Numurkah homes, with the same engineered footings and clean council paperwork.

Numurkah, on the Broken Creek north of Shepparton, has a solid stock of older weatherboard and period homes, many stumped on red gum a long time ago. The northern Goulburn Valley shares the same reactive-clay challenge as the towns to the south: ground that swells and shrinks with the seasons and the irrigation cycle, slowly working timber stumps loose and rotten. The familiar signs follow, a sloping floor, a door that drags, a crack creeping up a wall.
Distance is no obstacle.
Plenty of restumpers stay close to Shepparton and treat Numurkah as too far out. We do not. Numurkah and the surrounding district are part of our regular run, and the job is done to exactly the same standard: engineered footings to AS 2870, a proper building permit, and staged stump replacement that keeps the house supported throughout. A typical Numurkah job.
A period weatherboard in Numurkah had perished stumps along the verandah side and a floor that sloped noticeably towards the street. We restumped the failed rows in concrete, re-levelled the front of the house, and improved the subfloor ventilation that had kept the stumps damp.
