The best time of year to restump in Shepparton.

Most people assume summer, because the weather is good. The clay disagrees. Here is how the Goulburn Valley’s wet-dry cycle actually affects a restump, when the season genuinely changes the outcome, and when it honestly does not matter at all.

The clay cycle

Why the answer is autumn, not summer.

Autumn and late spring, for a reason most people find backwards. The reactive clay under Greater Shepparton is at its wettest and most swollen in late winter and its driest and most shrunken by late February, and if you set a floor dead level at either extreme you have set it to a condition the ground only visits once a year. April to May and October to November are the shoulders, when the clay sits nearer the middle of its range, and a floor levelled then reads true for more of the year. Spring (September to November): drying out, opening up.

Early spring is the wettest the ground gets and the least useful time to take a level reading. By late October and November it has drained back toward the middle and conditions are close to autumn quality. Spring is also when flood risk on the Goulburn is at its highest, which is worth remembering if you are in a low part of Shepparton North or near the river.
